Talking to God

Talking to God through PrayerIs there a special way to pray?

Remember, prayer is a way of talking to God, and God is so great that he’ll know as soon as you start praying what’s in your heart. As long as the prayer is honest and you’re respectful, then any way of praying is okay.

You can pray to God whenever you like, as often as you like...

You can pray by yourself or with others...

You can pray to God to show him how much he means to you, to ask for help with something, to thank him for the great things he does…or, just for a chat!

You can sing, speak, write, think or simply feel a prayer

You can pray to God wherever you are.

Will God hear me, will he really answer my prayers?

If you pray to God he’ll definitely hear you and he’ll definitely answer too – at just the right time and in the way that’s best. It takes practice to know how or when the prayer is being answered, so practise recognising when God is lending a hand! Don’t forget to thank him for answering you!

Read some of the ways prayers have been answered…

Mary

I was making a decision about what I should focus on with my time, and asked God to show me what to do.

Slowly through advise from wise people, and through what was in my heart, I knew what I should do. (Mary)

Damian When my family were arguing, I prayed God would make it stop. It didn’t stop straight away, but I started to feel more peaceful about it, the more I talked to God about it. (Damian).

I was being bullied. I told God I was hurting and that I wanted it to stop. My friends began to stick up for me, and they helped me to get through it. (Rose)

Even if you have questions about whether God exists, or you’re not sure about whether God’s there, this could be a good conversation starter:

‘God, I’m not sure if you’re there, but if you are, I want to know you. Help me recognise you when you show yourself to me, whether it’s in other people, in the things I read, the world around me….wherever you are, help me to see you.’

People ask God for help, through hymns, poems, rhymes, songs and prayer find out more in Asking for help.

Reading the Bible is a great help when we're talking and listening to God. See what this weeks Sunday's Readings have to say to you.
